Cut Bank - The Edge of the Blackfeet Nation
Cut Bank is home to the Marias River, and the furthermost point of Captain Meriwether Lewis' venture in search of a low-elevation crossing. The crossing was within his eyesight, but the Blackfeet tribes aggressive stance against intruders repelled Captain Lewis and almost cost him his life. A young Blackfeet male was shot by Captain Lewis as he attempted to steal horses and supplies from the camp. Meriwether turned back in the Cut Bank region, because of the conflict and never found Marias Pass, the lowest crossing elevation, in the northernmost United States Rocky Mountains.
